Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been suspended for 10 months and will miss the rest of the season.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been handed a 10-month ban and will not be able to play until next season for his role in illegal football betting.

Tonali is one of three Italian players named as part of the football gambling investigation, with Nicolo Fagioli and Nicolo Zaniolo also charged.

The three were questioned by police about their involvement, with Juventus midfielder Fagioli claiming in a statement that Tonali had taken him to a location where he could not be traced.

Fagioli was suspended for seven months by the Italian Football Federation and ordered to undergo rehabilitation for his gambling addiction, setting a precedent.

At a hearing with Italian officials in Turin this week, Tonali’s representatives reached a settlement after being threatened with a three-year ban under FIFA regulations.

As a result, the 23-year-old Newcastle midfielder was instead banned from football for 10 months, making him unable to play for the rest of the season.

Tonali will not be able to play in any club or international matches and will miss Euro 2024 as his suspension runs until August next year.

“This contract consists of a 10-month suspension, eight months of rehabilitation activity and at least 16 months of individual appearances,” said Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation.

Tonali, who joined from AC Milan for £55m, dates back to his time in Serie A, and Fagioli explained that he started betting on him during his time with Italy’s Under-21s in 2021.

It is claimed that Milan were unaware of the situation when they approved his move to St James’ Park.

Tonali had featured in eight of Newcastle’s 11 games ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League game against Dortmund.

His appearances included a 2-1 loss to Liverpool in August.

A key player for Eddie Howe’s side, his suspension could have a major impact on their hopes of finishing in the top four of this season’s Premier League.

Newcastle currently sit in 6th place, four points behind fourth-placed Liverpool. The next meeting of both teams will be held in December.
