49ers depth chart: Buckner, Garnett second string; Armstrong/Hodges at ILB

Although classified as “unofficial,” the 49ers had no surprises in their initial depth for Monday night’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

Blaine Gabbert is the No. 1 quarterback, followed by Colin Kaepernick and Christian Ponder, which is the order coach Chip Kelly announced on Saturday.

Neither of the 49ers’ first-round draft picks this year are in the starting units. Instead, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (No. 7 overall) and left guard Joshua Garnett (No. 28) are listed as second string.

Buckner could elevate to the top unit, however, if projected starter Quinton Dial can’t play because of a sprained knee. Garnett is the backup to Zane Beadles, the 49ers’ only free-agent pickup who’s on the 53-man roster.

The starting offensive line also consists of left tackle Joe Staley, center Daniel Kilgore, right guard Anthony Davis and right tackle Trent Brown.

The starting offensive unit includes three wide receivers, with newly acquired Jeremy Kerley joining Torrey Smith and Quinton Patton. Kerley is also listed as their only punt-returner option, seeing how Jarryd Hayne retired in May and neither DeAndrew White, Kenneth Acker nor Bryce Treggs remain on the roster.

One starting job appears unresolved, at least publicly, as both Ray-Ray Armstrong and Gerald Hodges are listed as possible starters next to NaVorro Bowman at inside linebacker.

The 49ers also announced the jersey numbers for four newcomers: Ponder (No. 15), Kerley (No. 17), defensive back Marcus Cromartie (No. 20), offensive lineman John Theus (No. 71), wide receiver Rod Streater (No. 81) and defensive tackle Taylor Hart (No. 96). Streater’s number belonged the last three seasons to Anquan Boldin, although Ryan Whalen wore it in the exhibition season.
