The Detroit Lions are reportedly seeking additional pass-rushing options following Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Lions have contacted the New York Jets about edge rusher Haason Reddick, who requested a trade earlier this season but has yet to play for the team.
“Reddick’s recent decision to hire agent Drew Rosenhaus, who is known for expediting deals, could either help secure his future with the Jets or facilitate a trade,” Fowler noted. “Many around the league believe the Jets will eventually have to move on, and Detroit is wise to explore the possibility of a deal.”
Lions May Consider Other Alternatives
Fowler suggested the Lions might also explore other options to fill the void left by Hutchinson, who was leading the team with 7.5 sacks before suffering a fractured leg in Sunday’s win over the Dallas Cowboys. He was injured while sacking quarterback Dak Prescott, after colliding with teammate Alim McNeill.
The Lions could also reach out to other teams regarding available pass rushers.
“Would it make sense to contact the Raiders about Maxx Crosby, given Las Vegas’ 2-4 start? While it’s unlikely they would trade him, it’s worth a try,” Fowler speculated. “Giants pass rusher Azeez Ojulari drew interest in August, being behind Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux on the depth chart. He’s recorded three sacks in six games. While I don’t expect Detroit to mortgage their future, they’re likely exploring all options.”
Reddick’s Availability Remains Uncertain
Reddick might not be available after all. Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that their goal is to secure a long-term deal with the Jets, ending Reddick’s holdout.
“We are optimistic about resolving this situation with the Jets soon,” Rosenhaus told Schefter. “Haason wants to remain with the team for the long term, and we’re working toward that.”
Fowler hinted that the Lions might not be overly optimistic about landing Reddick but felt obligated to inquire about his availability.
“The Lions have checked in on Haason Reddick’s situation, according to a source. This could just be routine due diligence,” Fowler shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Dan Campbell said GM Brad Holmes is doing his homework, and this appears to be part of that process.”
Lions Commit to Defensive Lineman Alim McNeill
Head coach Dan Campbell emphasized the team’s trust in its defensive line depth, particularly McNeill.
The Lions recently extended McNeill’s contract, signing him to a four-year deal worth $97 million, with $55 million guaranteed. The deal was announced on October 16, and McNeill expressed his gratitude afterward.
“I’m really happy we got this done,” McNeill said. “It’s definitely a relief. I’m extremely grateful and appreciate everyone involved in making this decision.”
