An assessment of the NFL OC landscape

This offseason has shown what can go wrong at the offensive coordinator position. Due to several decisions made in January and February, the NFL is no longer without an OC who has held his current position for more than two seasons. After various redundancies and layoffs, the 2,022 staff group is now the longest serving OC.Pete Carmichael, one of the longest tenured coordinators in NFL history, is no longer with the Saints.

The team moved after 15 seasons that included part-time call-up duties. The Browns released four-year non-playing signal caller Alex Van Pelt, while three-year signal callers Arthur Smith and Sean Waldron will be on the move this winter. Brian Callahan has produced one of the best performances of his five-year tenure with the Bengals.

HC, which has been more offensive of late, has taken some hits this offseason, ranking five of the eight positions as defensive leaders. Callahan, Dave Canales and Jim Harbaugh are the only offensive line prospects hired this cycle. But half the NFL teams enter the new season with new OCs.

Johnson’s return to form in Detroit has been one of the big stories of the offseason, but the development hasn’t been well received by the GM. For weeks this offseason, the two-year-old Lions were considered the leading candidates for Washington, and the team received no word that Johnson planned to stay in Detroit (so at least until 2025, giving him his long-awaited move to HC).

until the commander’s task force went to Detroit for another interview and asked back and forth exactly what was going on. Johnson is expected to remain a progressive HC candidate next year, but Dan Campbell will still be on the job in 2024.

Kafka interviewed for the Seahawks HC position, and the Giants then denied him a meeting with an NFC West team for the OC position. Rumors surfaced earlier this year that Kafka and Brian Daboll were no longer on good terms, with the latter stepping down from Kafka’s duties ahead of the 2022 season in 2023. Taylor may also have issues with his team. Doug Pederson gave Taylor a call sheet last season, and Trevor Lawrence didn’t make the jump many expected. After the collapse that knocked the Jaguars out of the playoff picture, the team began to look at its offense.
