DeWanna Bonner is the latest player to leave the Connecticut Sun, signing a one-year deal with the Indiana Fever, according to a report by ESPN’s Alexa Philippou on Sunday.
A two-time WNBA champion and six-time All-Star, Bonner spent five seasons with the Sun, helping them reach five semifinal appearances and the WNBA Finals in 2022.
The Fever, who were swept in the first round of last year’s playoffs, have significantly bolstered their roster. With the additions of Bonner and Natasha Howard, the re-signing of Kelsey Mitchell, and the trade for Sophie Cunningham, Indiana now looks like a legitimate contender. The team also boasts young stars Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston.
There was speculation that Bonner might return to the Phoenix Mercury, where she played the first 10 seasons of her career. Her fiancée, Alyssa Thomas, was traded to Phoenix in January as part of Connecticut’s roster overhaul.
The Sun are undergoing a full rebuild after trading Thomas, dealing DiJonai Carrington and Ty Harris to the Dallas Wings, and losing Brionna Jones to the Atlanta Dream in free agency.
On Sunday, Philippou released the full details of the four-team trade involving Carrington and Harris to Dallas, Cunningham to Indiana, and Thomas to Phoenix.
With the departures of Thomas, Bonner, Carrington, Harris, and Jones, Connecticut has now lost its entire starting five from the 2024 season.
