Cowboys Rumors: Dallas Is Unlikely to Be Able to Lure Pete Carroll to Take the Defensive Coordinator Role

The obvious question is why Carroll would want to return to a coordinator role after decades as a head coach. Carroll appear to have more to lose than to gain from relegation.

Even if the Cowboys remain an elite unit, it’s hard to imagine Carroll’s stock would be any higher.

Conversely, if the team performs poorly, it will be less likely that Carroll will get another head coaching job.

This only makes sense if Carroll wants to coach the team next season, even if he doesn’t become the head coach.

With Mike McCarthy entering the final year of his contract, could this role lead to a promotion to head coach in 2025? Carroll admits he is ‘open’ to coaching again, but adds he won’t find the right landing spot easy.

“I don’t know. I have the energy and the thought and the desire to do it, but I can’t imagine a good place to be,” Carroll told Seattle Sports’ “Brock & Salk” in a Jan. 11 interview. He said, “I don’t know. I’m open to everything, but I’m not holding my breath.

“There’s a lot of world out there and I’m looking forward to the challenge and going for it. When that happens, it happens. Let’s see. I don’t know what to tell you about this yet.”
