DALLAS and TYSONS, Va. – Tegna has finalized a broadcast rights agreement designating KFAA in Dallas as the exclusive local television partner of the Dallas Wings in the WNBA.
Under the terms of the deal, all 2025 Wings games not slated for national television will be available for free over-the-air in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on KFAA (Ch. 29), with select games potentially airing on WFAA (Ch. 8).
KFAA and Tegna will manage local and regional advertising and sponsorship sales for all Wings broadcasts.
This agreement further expands the sports programming on KFAA. The station, along with its sister station WFAA, also holds local rights for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, which signed a multi-year deal with Tegna last fall. Additionally, KFAA airs games for the NBA G League’s Texas Legends.
“We are thrilled to announce this groundbreaking broadcast partnership with KFAA,” said Dallas Wings CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb. “Through KFAA’s extensive reach, Wings games will now be accessible to more fans than ever before. We appreciate Tegna’s commitment to the Wings and women’s sports and look forward to delivering top-tier live sports programming to North Texas.”
Carolyn Mungo, president and general manager of WFAA/KFAA, expressed similar enthusiasm: “The Dallas Wings are the perfect addition to our expanding lineup of sports broadcasts on KFAA. Our station has become a go-to destination for basketball fans, and we’re excited to showcase the Wings during their milestone tenth-anniversary season.”
Ahead of the 2024 season, the Wings announced plans to relocate to downtown Dallas, where they will play in a renovated Dallas Memorial Auditorium. The team is also developing a state-of-the-art practice facility nearby. In addition, the Wings have made significant changes to their Front Office, hiring Curt Miller as executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager, and Chris Koclanes as head coach. The team also won the 2025 WNBA Draft Lottery in November, securing the No. 1 overall pick.
Fans can watch Wings games on KFAA (Ch. 29) through their cable, satellite, or streaming provider, or via an HD antenna. As of Jan. 22, KFAA is available on multiple platforms in Dallas-Fort Worth, including:
This agreement between Tegna and the Dallas Wings represents a significant step forward for local sports broadcasting, particularly for women’s sports. By securing exclusive local television rights, Tegna expands its growing basketball portfolio and strengthens KFAA as a go-to station for hoops fans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Key Takeaways & Impact
1. Increased Accessibility for Fans
All non-nationally televised Dallas Wings games will now be available over-the-air, making it easier for local fans to watch without the need for expensive streaming subscriptions.
The deal mirrors what Tegna did with the Dallas Mavericks, reinforcing KFAA/WFAA as the local basketball hub.
2. Boost for Women’s Sports
The deal reflects a larger trend of increased investment in women’s professional basketball.
With the Wings celebrating their 10th anniversary and a high-profile front-office revamp, this new partnership positions them for greater exposure and fan engagement.
3. Strategic Business Move for Tegna
The agreement allows Tegna to handle advertising and sponsorship sales, opening new revenue streams.
By partnering with both the Mavericks and Wings, KFAA cements itself as a key sports broadcaster in a highly competitive market.
4. Synergy with the Wings’ Relocation Plans
The Wings moving to a renovated Dallas Memorial Auditorium aligns well with this broadcast expansion, ensuring stronger local brand visibility.
The team also holds the No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, potentially bringing in a star player to further drive viewership.
Conclusion
This is a win-win partnership—Tegna strengthens its local sports dominance, the Wings gain broader exposure, and fans benefit from free access to games. The timing is also ideal, as the Wings enter a pivotal moment in their franchise history with a new arena, management, and top draft pick. It will be interesting to see if this move leads to higher ratings, increased sponsorship deals, and an overall boost in the Wings’ market presence.
