Despite pre-season impressive performances, Jurgen Klopp says Alexis Mac Allister ‘will need time’ to blend

Jurgen Klopp said Alexis Mac Allister ‘will need time’ despite getting off to a good start.

Despite impressive pre-season performances, Jurgen Klopp says Alexis Mac Allister ‘will need time’ to settle in.

“He will need time” is a phrase we have heard many times. Sometimes that’s true, sometimes not.

Two of Liverpool’s best players are a perfect example; Mo Salah jumped into his contract in 2017 while Andy Robertson had to wait for a chance to secure his place in the first team.

Luckily, it looks like Mac Allister will look more like the first one and start off with a bang. However, given the demands placed on Klopp’s midfield, there are no guarantees – and the manager was quick to repeat that.

Following Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Leicester which saw Mac Allister impress again, Klopp said the Argentine would ‘need some time’.

The German added: “Even in the season it’s not like you have the first game and it’s the best game of the season.”
“It would be really awful if that were the case.”

Klopp is right that Liverpool must avoid an early climax. However, that doesn’t mean the Reds don’t want a quick start.

For the past 20 years the Reds have struggled to recover from early season problems, almost always doing better after a strong start.

Klopp also spoke about the fact that not only new signings still need to be fully prepared for the upcoming season.

The boss explained: “Everyone still has work to do, that’s great.

“Tomorrow, in the morning, we have recovery and then we have a good, good video meeting where we go through all the stuff so far and show the kids the good and the bad.

“In the afternoon [we have] a good physical session and then we prepare for the Bayern [Munich] game with two sessions. That’s all.”

Although Bayern are regarded as one of the best in the world, it will still be difficult to get a true picture of Liverpool’s preparations for the new season.

We may have to wait until the Reds’ Premier League opens, or even beyond, to find out.
