Eagles OC Brian Johnson interviews for NFL head coaching job

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, 36, will soon be promoted to NFL head coach. The Carolina Panthers are expected to interview Johnson for the head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Panthers have the worst record in the league this season, going 2-15 in coach Frank Reich’s first year. He was fired after Carolina’s record dropped to 1-10 in a Week 12 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

As for Johnson, he could lead a Panthers offense that ranks last in passing yards per game (265.3), yards per game (161.2) and points per game (13.9). He was a former star quarterback at Utah State University and became the QB coach and offensive coordinator at age 22.

In Johnson’s second season at center, he was able to help the coaches select Bryce Young No. 1 overall. But when asked about the issue Wednesday, Johnson would not comment on the report. He also won’t be available for interviews until the end of the season.

The same goes for the Eagles on Monday night when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild card. The Eagles offense has been inconsistent under Johnson. Philadelphia started the season 10-1, but lost five of their last six regular season games. The Eagles haven’t scored at least 20 points in four games in that span. Before Monday’s playoff game, Johnson needs to keep the offense going if he wants to add postseason improvement for his coach.
