Falcons To Hire Zac Robinson As OC

Jan 28, 2024 #Zac Robinson

Raheem Morris is to move from Los Angeles to Atlanta, at least one Rams employee will join him. The Falcons will hire Rams QB coach/passing coordinator Zach Robinson as offensive coordinator, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

The deal includes a three-year contract, SI’s Albert Breer added. As Rapoport rightly noted, Robinson recommended Morris as his first choice for the position. The latter served as the head coach in Atlanta during his previous conference with the team. Now it brings back at least one familiar face, ending Robinson’s involvement in this year’s coordinator recruiting cycle.

The 37-year-old has been linked to several OC openings around the league and would be a logical candidate to leave Sean McVay’s staff. Despite his lack of experience in a coaching career, Robinson received at least six interview requests from teams looking for a new CO. Robinson had a short career as a football player in the NFL, but has been a coach with the Rams since 2019.

He served as an assistant quarterbacks coach for two seasons, working with the team’s wide receivers. Over the past two years, he has become an integral part of the Rams’ offensive line, holding the titles of QB coach and running game coordinator. Overall, Los Angeles and quarterback Matthew Stafford have improved their health and performance in 2023. The team ranked 10th in passing yards per game and had solid overall performance and offense (239).Robinson replaces Dave Ragon, who served as the Falcons’ secondary OC during Arthur Smith’s tenure as head coach.

The Falcons have come a long way in his time at the helm, never finishing higher than 17th in scoring while posting a 7-10 record each year. Ragone has yet to play another position, but he may now be ready to do so alongside regulars Morris and Robinson.Atlanta requested an interview with LSU’s Cortez Hankton today, but the team acted quickly, hiring Robinson for the gig.

The latter has been tabbed as another developing offensive mind under McVay and will be in serious trouble if he comes to the Falcons. The team has recent top 10 picks at the receiver and running back positions as well as a strong offensive line. However, as will become clear in the 2023 campaign, quarterback is a significant void on the roster. Desmond Ridder and veteran 2022 third-round pick Taylor Heinicke of the Falcons are under contract for next year, but expect more additions after the team struggles under center in 2023.

No matter who takes over next year, Robinson will be charged. In particular, we aim to increase efficiency by air. Morris has experience on both sides of the ball, but most of his work in the NFL has been on defense. This means Robinson will likely have considerable autonomy despite his inexperience. The Rams need a new DC to replace Morris, but now they need to find an internal or external candidate to take over Robinson’s duties. The process was worth watching, but the Falcons immediately filled a critical void on their staff.
