Ibrahima Konate was not in Liverpool’s squad to face Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday night, explaining his absence from the group.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his line-up from the Merseyside derby, with Luke Chambers making his full debut.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Ryan Gravenbirch and Curtis Jones all started, but the strength of Liverpool’s bench stood out.

One absentee from a reserve list that included the likes of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai, however, was Konate.

The Frenchman was surprisingly left out of the squad, with Van Dijk being used as central defender alongside Jarrell Quansah.

This raises concerns about another fitness issue for Konate, who has already missed three games this season with a hamstring injury, or perhaps even the aftermath of a near-miss when he avoided a second yellow card against Everton. There is a possibility that it is.

However, Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo reports that the 24-year-old was simply rested, with Van Dijk and Quansah considered sufficient replacements for starters Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

The option to leave Konate out despite injuries to Thiago, Andy Robertson, Stefan Bicetic, Ben Doak and Conor Bradley is a testament to Klopp’s strength.

They only need two days to rest, recuperate and prepare for Sunday’s visit to Nottingham Forest, but the opportunity to rest the number five will be a huge advantage.

Konate has appeared in nine games so far this season, playing the full 90 minutes in only four, coming on as a substitute three times and being substituted twice.

He doesn’t have to take risks against players who are more prone to injury than others due to his extremely heavy height and dynamic style.
