Patrick Willis was put in a position where he had to make a decision between Colin Kaepernick and Brock Purdy, ultimately deciding to choose Kaepernick.

Patrick Willis faced with choosing between Colin Kaepernick and Brock Purdy: ‘I have to choose Cap’

Brock Purdy etched his name into the 49ers history books with his outstanding 2023 season, most notably recording the most passing yards in franchise history.

There have been many comparisons between him and his predecessor Jimmy Garoppolo, but now there is a new one. It’s Brock Purdy vs. Colin Kaepernick.

And former 49ers linebacker and soon-to-be Pro Football Hall of Famer Patrick Willis prefers Kaepernick over Purdy. On Robert Griffin III’s RGIII and the Ones podcast, Willis was asked: 2012 Kaepernick or 2023 Purdy.

Willis has spoken highly of Purdy in the past, but decided to stick with the quarterback he played with with the 49ers in recent seasons.

I’ve copied the interview clip below. “I need to get the captain. A lot of people can go back and weigh how he looked over the years with the Niners or in his final year with the Niners. He did what he had to do.

It may not have looked like a traditional quarterback throw, but damn, you guys at RGIII had something interesting. But Purdy is a tough guy. I like 1A and 1B.”

As RGIII mentioned, this is the 2012 Colin Kaepernick. This is not what Colin Kaepernick became in the final years of his life.

Willis has also been very vocal about Purdy, and he’s probably ranked right behind Kaepernick (1a and 1b). But it makes sense why Willis chose Kaepernick.

Aside from his two teammates, Kaepernick was a beast in 2012 and there was even third-party video of Willis being amazed by Kaepernick’s running speed during the NFC divisional win over the Green Bay Packers (I tried to find that video, but couldn’t). . ‘tea). to).

When he came out against the Chicago Bears, everyone thought the 49ers had something special. As he ran with his pistol and knocked down the defenses with his legs, everyone wondered what kind of ceiling he had.

It turns out we were almost witnessing the ceiling. Everything he threw recklessly in 2012 due to being an “early career loser” and “lack of experience” was never corrected, and Kaepernick has regressed over the years (poor coaching certainly didn’t help).

Purdy made the same mistakes as Kaepernick, but most of them only happened once. Rarely have I seen Brock Purdy make the same mistake twice.

At the same time, some of Purdy’s big plays in the playoffs would have been easy touchdowns for Kaepernick. Kaepernick found leg protection so difficult that they had to spy on him.

Every time he covered people, Kaepernick would take one look and run across the field. Even when he shouldn’t have worked, he worked. Despite the success, for whatever reason the second and third readings did not go the same way as they did for Purdy.

Kaepernick also had a cannon arm that surpassed Purdy’s underrated arm strength. If the 49ers could implement some sort of one-read-and-play play to force the defense to deploy a Purdy spy like Kaepernick, I wonder how much that would open up the backfield.

On the other hand, if Purdy plays more, he runs the risk of injury and is always playing at unexpected moments. Who would you like to take? Purdy in 2023 or Kaepernick in 2012?
