The Mexican driver’s recent performances have sparked speculation about whether he will retain his Red Bull contract, which he recently extended until 2026.

Perez has not secured a grand prix podium since China and has only scored 15 out of 116 points for Red Bull in their last five races.

His difficulties continued at the British Grand Prix, where he crashed out, exited in Q1 during qualifying, and started the grand prix from P19.

Could Liam Lawson Replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull?

Reports suggest Perez has a performance clause in his contract that could lead to his replacement by Daniel Ricciardo if his performances do not improve.

However, according to Motorsport.com, Red Bull has granted their reserve driver, Liam Lawson, a test in the RB20 a week after the British Grand Prix.

Lawson stepped in for an injured Ricciardo at Alpha Tauri for five races last season, achieving an impressive ninth-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Since then, the Kiwi has been eager to secure a full-time race seat in F1, closely following the underperforming Ricciardo, and now may be brought in to increase pressure on Perez.

Ricciardo’s early 2024 performances were sub-par compared to Yuki Tsunoda, who earned the majority of Red Bull’s points.

Lawson will be aiming to impress and put pressure on both Perez and Ricciardo when he tests the Red Bull as part of their filming day.

While Lawson’s test will take place at a Promotional Event, it will undoubtedly provide the team with an opportunity to evaluate their young driver against Perez.

Additional Story: Ricciardo’s Struggles at Alpha Tauri

Daniel Ricciardo’s return to Formula 1 with Alpha Tauri has been far from smooth. The Australian driver, who was brought in as a potential successor to Sergio Perez, has struggled to find his form.

Despite his experience, Ricciardo has been outperformed by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who has consistently earned more points for the team.

This has led to growing concerns within the Red Bull camp about Ricciardo’s ability to deliver the expected results.

Ricciardo’s sub-par performances have opened the door for reserve driver Liam Lawson, who impressed during his five-race stint last season.

With Red Bull now providing Lawson an opportunity to test the RB20, the pressure is mounting on both Ricciardo and Perez.

This move signals Red Bull’s intent to explore all options as they strive to maintain their competitive edge in the championship race.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Lawson’s performance during the test, which could have significant implications for the future driver lineup at Red Bull.

The young Kiwi’s ability to adapt and showcase his talent in the RB20 could potentially accelerate his promotion to a full-time race seat, putting further pressure on both Perez and Ricciardo to elevate their performances.
