San Francisco 49ers: Kyle Shanahan revealed an update on Christian McCaffrey’s injury status

While 49ers fans are probably thrilled with yesterday’s result, all the news after the game wasn’t positive.

Star running back Christian McCaffrey was injured during Sunday’s 27-10 win at Washington, which helped the 49ers clinch the No. 1 seed. 1 in the NFC and earned a first-round bye. San Francisco (12-4) will host a divisional round playoff game on Jan. 20 or 21, giving McCaffrey nearly three weeks to heal.

NBC Sports’ Peter King reported Monday that McCaffrey has been diagnosed with a calf strain

“We’re very confident about it,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday about McCaffrey ready for the playoff opener.

“It was good news. It could have been much worse. We are happy that he will be taken care of this week. Hopefully he can get to work on our week off.

McCaffrey leads the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 yards from scrimmage and is tied with Miami’s Raheem Mostert for the most touchdowns with 21. Elijah Mitchell will assume the starting running back role against the Rams this week.

Mitchell had 17 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown against the Commanders in his biggest outing of the season. The San Francisco 49ers should be concerned about Christian McCaffrey’s injury history

While Shanahan will of course downplay the injury, McCaffrey’s injury history should not be taken lightly.

“I think it was minor and it was just a smart move, especially because I didn’t know what was going to happen next week,” McCaffrey said via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

“I didn’t want to just go in there and make things worse. You can’t be stupid about certain things.

McCaffrey had 14 carries for 64 yards and four receptions for 27 yards Sunday before heading to the sideline following the injury.

While Shanahan will inevitably downplay the extent of Christian McCaffrey’s injury status, there’s really no telling how healthy the 49ers star will be until he takes the field in three weeks when the San Francisco 49ers host their first playoff game.

However, given McCaffrey’s history, any injury this late in the season should be concerning. He will be critical to the 49ers’ goal of winning a Super Bowl later this year.
