Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has been featured in trade speculation, with one proposed deal sending him to the New York Islanders. As Marner approaches the final year of his six-year, $65.41 million contract, he has become a focal point of trade discussions. PuckPedia’s new tool, PuckGM, has allowed users to propose their own trades, including a suggested blockbuster involving Marner moving to the Islanders.

The proposed trade involves:

Maple Leafs receive:
– Brock Nelson
– Ryan Pulock

Islanders receive:
– Mitch Marner
– Timothy Liljegren
– A third-round pick in 2026

This potential trade would significantly impact both teams. The Leafs would trade Marner and Liljegren, along with a future third-round pick, for Nelson and Pulock. While Nelson may not match Marner’s skill, Pulock offers an upgrade over Liljegren, potentially strengthening Toronto’s defense. Nelson is in the final year of his $36 million contract, while Pulock is in the third year of his $49.2 million deal.

For the Islanders, acquiring Marner could boost their offense, compensating for the loss of Pulock. Liljegren could help shore up their defense.

Nelson as a Trade Prospect

Arthur Staple from The Athletic mentioned Nelson as a possible trade candidate if the Islanders are not in a playoff position by the trade deadline. Staple noted that if the Islanders are in contention, they might look to add players, but if they are out of the race, Nelson could be a prime candidate for a trade to bring in significant value.

Nelson, who has been with the Islanders since being drafted 30th overall in 2012, has played 840 NHL games, scoring 275 goals and 256 assists for 531 points.

Marner’s Desire to Stay

Despite the trade rumors, Marner has expressed his strong desire to stay with the Maple Leafs. Following Toronto’s early playoff exit, Marner emphasized his commitment to the team and his love for the city, indicating he hopes to remain in Toronto for the long term. Marner has played 576 NHL games, recording 194 goals and 445 assists for 639 points.
