The Detroit Lions’ final week of preseason has arrived, and with it, less and less chances to make the final roster. This week’s practices and Saturday’s preseason finale will be especially important and exciting.

According to Dan Campbell, the Lions will concentrate their practice efforts over the next two days on strengthening their team dynamic before turning their attention to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.

“We will be preparing for Pittsburgh over the next two days, starting with our practices today and tomorrow,” Campbell stated. “It is Detroit vs. Detroit; we need to improve in certain areas.” Many of the guys made progress during that game, as well as over the previous week. That is excellent to see, then. That is what you are trying to find.

growth everywhere, which was heartening. We now need to improve a little bit in this area. The important thing is to keep developing the back end of the roster while also getting the nucleus of this team ready for game one, as we know they will be getting most of the playing time versus Pittsburgh. Here, we will enjoy a pleasant two days.

These are the things I noticed during Tuesday’s Lions practice.

PRESENCE,

Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Dan Skipper, Christian Mahogany, Giovanni Manu, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Terrion Arnold were among the players missing practicing on Tuesday. While fellow cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson were limited, Ennis Rakestraw made a comeback after sitting out the majority of the previous week. Before the team plays its first game of the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams, Campbell anticipates that several of its stars will be back in the field. A number of players, including Reader and Mahogany, were working as trainers on the side.

Reynolds, Wright, Impress

The attention that other players in their position group receive is more than that of two important players: running back Craig Reynolds and tight end Brock Wright. Although the main actors are Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, and Jahmyr Gibbs, Wright and Reynolds frequently play supporting roles.

Both athletes performed admirably throughout practice on Tuesday. During team exercises, Reynolds had a powerful touchdown run of around 70 yards, and Wright caught a throw from Goff while running after the grab with some force.

Both players are anticipated to be important offensive depth pieces for Detroit. Reynolds has been using the first team offense as the backup running back behind Montgomery while Gibbs is out.

Reynolds has been associated with the Lions since his arrival in 2021 as an unknown. He has established himself as a dependable player, impressing the coaches with his knowledge of the playbook and scheme.

“It is all about being consistent, that is the most important thing,” Reynolds said to Lions On SI following practice. “The dog days of camp are upon us. Everyone is exhausted and has pains. Simply putting up daily effort and energy to control what I can. And just controlling what I can while being a dependable and consistent player.

Since LaPorta has been out since the start of joint practices in New York, Wright has assumed the position of top tight end.

ISAIAH WILLIAMS IS STILL ACTING

The undrafted free agent from Illinois is still putting up a good fight to reach the final 53-man roster. Throughout the preseason, he has demonstrated dynamic talent, making contributions in his two game opportunities as a returner, receiver, and runner.

Williams is hindered by his size and the fact that Kalif Raymond, the Lions’ current returner, is already competent. He is not leaving gently, though. During the first 1-on-1 drills, Williams had another big play after catching a touchdown from Nate Sudfeld.Although it seems unlikely that Williams will see playing time as a genuine outside pass-catcher, Campbell said that the Lions might let him see some time as a de facto outside receiver in unconventional formations. Williams will therefore continue to work his way up to a slot receiving position on the team.

BANCH FIGHTS

Brian Branch, who had surgery in the off-season, kept showing his football saviness. From the safety position, the Alabama product seems to explode with at least one remarkable play every day, and Tuesday was no exception.

During team drills, Branch got the ball out of wide receiver Jameson Williams’ grasp. Jared Goff sent a screen ball to Williams, who was pursued by Branch to force a fumble.

There were almost a few more big plays for the defense. Against the second-team offense, C.J. Moore had a sack and Alex Anzalone just missed an interception.
