Chase Elliott speaks out on last-lap incident with Ryan Blaney at Michigan

Last week at Michigan, Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney got into one another on the last lap and it cost both drivers points. Elliott and Blaney were on the way to top-10 finishes, maybe even top-5, and instead, they finished P15 and P18 in the NASCAR race, respectively.

The two cars were racing 6th and 7th when Chase Elliott washed up into Ryan Blaney. It wasn’t egregious, but on the last lap, it was enough to take away their momentum and cost both of them what amounted to roughly a 10-point loss.

This week, it appears that the two drivers and friends have talked things over. Elliott addressed the situation with Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports.

“Yeah for sure. Obviously, I hate, hate that it ended up the way it did and hate it messed up Ryan’s day too,’ Elliott explained. “But we were all packing it off in the corner trying to get around there to have a better finish, you know? Like I told him, I hated it, certainly was not my intent, and unfortunately messed both of our days up.”

Chase Elliott admitted he wasn’t thinking much about the regular season championship. All he was worried about was getting the best finish.

“I was just trying to finish the best I could,” he continued. “We were, what like sixth, seventh? Somewhere right in there. So, I’m not sure that would have gotten you to a top five or anything, but certainly, everything matters as you’re coming down the stretch. Just trying to, trying to get the best result that I could and ended up making it worse by a bunch.”

Chase Elliott racing for regular season championship

With two races left in the regular season, Chase Elliott is looking for two great races to close it out. He trails Tyler Reddick for the regular season championship by only 10 points at the moment. That can be wiped away in one stage.

Don’t sleep on Kyle Larson, either. Daytona and Darlington could easily let him erase his 32-point deficit to Reddick and claim the regular season championship for himself. But Elliott is in the best position among those trailing the leader.

Reddick has been on a hot streak like no other this season. He has had the best run of his career stretching all the way back to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. In the last 11 races, his worst finish was P22 at Iowa. His second-worst finish, P8 at Sonoma where he led the most laps.

So, Chase Elliott is in for a fight. He’s fighting uphill, too. Will he be able to close the gap on Reddick or will the 23XI Racing driver speed away with the regular season championship?
