The Detroit Lions, boasting a stellar 11-1 record after a tight 23-20 Thanksgiving victory over the Chicago Bears, are dealing with a slew of injuries. As they gear up for a pivotal “Thursday Night Football” clash against the Green Bay Packers on December 2, the team is making moves to address these challenges.
On Friday, November 29, the Lions took a significant step by adding former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander to strengthen their defense. Now, they’re making another impactful addition to their roster.
Detroit Lions Make Big Moves Ahead of Green Bay Packers Game
ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports that the Lions are signing three-time Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams to their practice squad, with plans to elevate him to the active roster soon.
“Former Pro-Bowl safety Jamal Adams is signing with the Lions practice squad with the idea that he’ll be elevated to Detroit’s roster, per source,” Schefter shared on X. “Adams had been eyeing an opportunity with a playoff contender. Adams’ agent, Kevin Conner of @UniSportsMgmt, confirmed the agreement.”
Adams appeared optimistic about the move, posting “God is good” on X on Saturday. While the post could reference anything, its timing aligns with the Detroit signing news.
Adams, 29, began the season with the Tennessee Titans, playing in three games before being released on October 17 at his own request, according to ESPN. A veteran entering his eighth NFL season, Adams has previously played for the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Titans. Drafted in the first round by the Jets in 2017, he earned All-Pro honors in 2019.
Throughout his career, Adams has amassed 498 tackles, 36 pass deflections, 21.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, and four interceptions.
Jamal Adams Can Be a ‘Great Fit’ for the Detroit Lions
While the Lions already have a solid safety duo in Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, NFL analyst Brad Berreman from SideLion Report believes Adams could still be valuable.
“Adams is getting far removed from his best days at this point, and when he has been healthy lately, he has been a liability in coverage,” Berreman wrote in a December 1 analysis. However, he noted that Adams “could certainly fit in a hybrid box safety/linebacker role like what (Lions safety) Ifeatu Melifonwu did (and was so effective at) late last season.”
Berreman added, “If Adams can be healthy, he could be impactful for the Lions down the stretch and into the playoffs. But that’s hardly a guarantee, as he’s more name than game at this point.”
Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report echoed similar sentiments in his December 1 piece, highlighting the need for defensive depth as the Lions push toward the postseason.
“The team needs to replenish its defensive depth for the home stretch of the regular season and playoffs,” Zucker wrote.
Given Adams’ reputation, Zucker acknowledged fans’ excitement about his potential under head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, stating that the signing makes sense for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
