If there’s one word to define Dan Campbell’s coaching philosophy, it’s aggressive.
The Lions’ head coach has built a reputation for making bold calls, especially on fourth down. He consistently opts to press forward in high-stakes moments, trusting his players to execute and gain the upper hand. While other coaches may hesitate in similar scenarios, Campbell’s calculated risks often pay off, thanks to the formidable squad he’s assembled.
That trademark boldness was on full display Thursday night when the Lions secured a critical 34-31 NFC North victory over the Packers on “Thursday Night Football.” With just 17 seconds remaining, Campbell passed up a go-ahead field goal attempt, opting instead to run for a first down. His gamble paid off, allowing the clock to tick down to the final seconds before Jake Bates’ game-winning field goal clinched the win for Detroit.
The thrilling finish capped an evening filled with gutsy decisions by Campbell. The victory not only solidified the Lions’ postseason berth but also brought them closer to securing back-to-back NFC North titles.
Just how bold was Campbell’s approach? Here’s a breakdown of Detroit’s fourth-down plays in their win over Green Bay.
Lions’ Fourth-Down Conversions vs. Packers
The Lions converted an impressive four of five fourth-down attempts against the Packers. Two of those conversions resulted in touchdowns, while the fourth ultimately sealed the game.
Jahmyr Gibbs’ Touchdown
Campbell’s first major gamble came late in the first half. After three unsuccessful attempts to score inside the five-yard line, the Lions faced 4th-and-1 with just 11 seconds left. Undeterred, Campbell called for a pass play, and Jared Goff delivered with a touchdown throw to Jahmyr Gibbs.
Instead of settling for a field goal and a six-point lead, Campbell’s boldness gave the Lions a 10-point advantage heading into halftime.
Tim Patrick’s Touchdown
In the third quarter, with Detroit trailing 21-17 after surrendering 14 quick points, Campbell doubled down on his aggressive strategy during a pivotal 13-play, 79-yard drive.
The Lions converted their first 4th-and-1 of the drive when Goff kept the ball on a sneak to move the chains at their own 49-yard line. Later in the drive, Detroit once again faced a fourth down inside the 10-yard line. Campbell stayed true to his identity, leaving the offense on the field. His faith was rewarded when Goff connected with Tim Patrick for a touchdown, one of Patrick’s two scores on the night.
Game-Sealing First Down
In the final moments of the game, Campbell made another gutsy call. With the score tied 31-31 and the Lions deep in Packers territory, Goff mishandled the snap on 4th-and-1. However, running back David Montgomery recovered, gaining the necessary yardage for a first down.
That conversion allowed Detroit to run the clock down before Jake Bates’ 35-yard field goal secured the victory. Campbell’s aggressive mindset once again paid dividends, as the Lions walked away with a hard-fought win.
Dan Campbell’s Fourth-Down Legacy
Since taking over as the Lions’ head coach, Campbell has led the league in fourth-down attempts, with Detroit going for it 145 times under his tenure. The Browns (133) and Panthers (123) follow behind.
Out of those 145 attempts, the Lions have converted 82 times, including 13 touchdowns. Their 56% conversion rate ranks among the top 10 in the NFL.
This season, Detroit has attempted 22 fourth-down plays, converting 15. While Cleveland leads the league with 30 attempts and 20 conversions, the Lions’ 68% success rate ranks sixth overall.
Campbell’s fearless approach has become a hallmark of his coaching style, and with wins like Thursday’s, it’s clear the Lions thrive under his leadership.
