The Detroit Lions are preparing for one of the most significant games in franchise history, set to take place on Sunday, January 5, against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field. The stakes couldn’t be higher. The winner of this game will secure the top seed in the NFC, claim the NFC North title, earn a first-round playoff bye, and gain home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Meanwhile, the losing team will drop to the fifth seed and face a road game in the wild-card round.
In anticipation of this crucial matchup, the Lions have made an exciting announcement.
Detroit Lions Tease Black Uniforms for Vikings Game
On New Year’s Eve, just hours before the clock struck midnight, the Detroit Lions took to X to hint at a special uniform choice for the game against the Vikings.
“Guess what’s back, back again,” read the post, referencing Eminem’s hit song “Without Me.”
When the Lions teased their black alternative uniforms earlier this season, they followed through each time, making this as good as an announcement. The black jerseys are a fan favorite and a step up from last season’s gray, which many compared to sweatpants.
Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network addressed the uniform choice on X, replying to a fan’s question about whether the black jerseys could return for the final regular-season game.
“Uniforms are selected and approved by the league before the season,” Rogers explained. “The Lions submitted the throwbacks for Week 18 (third time in Campbell’s four years) in June. I’m not aware of mechanisms that allow for a mid-year change.”
Sunday’s game will mark the third time the Lions don the black uniforms this season. They wore them in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks, securing a 42-29 win, and again in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills, where they lost 45-42. So far, the black jerseys have resulted in a 50/50 record for the team this season.
Dan Campbell’s Latest Epic Locker Room Speech
Following their victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, January 30, Lions head coach Dan Campbell delivered another stirring locker room speech.
“I’ve got an unbelievable amount of respect for you guys,” Campbell began. “I know what this was, and there’s all these arguments about what this game really meant. Because the next week I respect the … out of you guys.”
Campbell praised his team’s effort, saying, “I respect how we roll the ball out and you guys just go out and compete. I can’t even put it into words, man. I cannot put it into words.” He continued, expressing how much he loves his players.
“Listen, we did some things. We got 14 wins,” Campbell said. “Alright, we already talked about once we got to where we were at, 13, that we franchise record. Fourteen’s a franchise record. 8-0 on the road, franchise record, alright? 8-0 the road, which tells you at its worst we can go anywhere and … win, gentlemen. That’s the bottom line.”
Looking ahead to the Vikings game, Campbell said, “You can’t ask for anything better” than having “the division and the 1 seed on the line, back at home.” He concluded, “This is what it’s all about; this is why you’re in this profession, man.”
