Amon-Ra St. Brown Becomes Second Lions Player to Bow Out of Pro Bowl Games
On Monday morning, the Detroit Lions announced that left tackle Taylor Decker would replace right tackle Penei Sewell in the 2025 Pro Bowl, as Sewell is bowing out due to an injury. Later in the day, the team representing his replacement revealed that Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown would also miss the Pro Bowl Games because of an injury.
New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers has been named as St. Brown’s replacement on the NFC Pro Bowl roster.
While Sewell’s left knee or leg injury was evident in the playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, the details of St. Brown’s injury are unclear.
St. Brown delivered another outstanding season in 2024. Though he fell short of his 2023 totals in receptions and yardage, he set a career-high with 12 touchdowns. He finished the season second in the league in receptions (115), fifth in receiving yards (1,263), and third in touchdowns. He was named First-Team All-Pro for the second consecutive year and was third among NFC wide receivers in Pro Bowl voting.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Bows Out of Pro Bowl Games Due to Injury
St. Brown has been a standout performer in the Pro Bowl Games over the last two years. In 2023, he won the “Best Catch” competition. During last year’s flag football game, he recorded 10 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown (credit to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit for uncovering those stats).
The decision for St. Brown to withdraw from the Pro Bowl Games shouldn’t be overlooked, as it’s possible he’s managing a minor, lingering injury. However, the event isn’t worth risking further harm, and citing an “injury” is the official reason for his absence. After an earlier-than-expected playoff exit, it’s reasonable to assume he also wanted some time away from football.
As of now, quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Decker, center Frank Ragnow, safety Brian Branch, and punter Jack Fox remain the Lions players slated to participate in the Pro Bowl Games, which begin Thursday night.
