Russell Wilson has been vocal about his desire to return as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. However, it’s becoming increasingly evident that the team may be ready to move on, with Justin Fields appearing as the likely successor.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shed light on the situation in a January 18 report analyzing the Steelers’ roster, suggesting that Wilson’s time in Pittsburgh may be coming to an end.
“Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are free agents, and it is highly unlikely both will be re-signed,” Dulac began.
Dulac continued: “When Wilson and the Steelers agreed to a one-year, veteran minimum contract in March, it was with the mutual intention of signing a longer-term deal after the season. However, after ending the year with five consecutive losses and amid a disconnect with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, that deal seems less likely to happen.”
Wilson was initially brought in to end the Steelers’ playoff drought, but as Dulac pointed out, “it didn’t happen.” He added that signing another veteran quarterback would not align with the team’s direction.
“That’s why Fields, in all likelihood, will be given the job,” Dulac stated. “He’s only 25 years old and demonstrated significant growth after his time in Chicago.”
What’s Next for Russell Wilson if Steelers Move On?
Despite the uncertainty in Pittsburgh, Wilson has made it clear he still wants to play as long as his body allows. At 36 years old, Wilson hopes to remain in the league for at least four more seasons, assuming there’s a team willing to take a chance on him.
With the NFL currently experiencing a shortage of quality starting quarterbacks, Wilson’s veteran experience may still appeal to teams. Compared to younger options like Will Levis, Drew Lock, or Aidan O’Connell, Wilson could provide a more reliable chance to win, especially given the inevitable injuries that arise at the position each season.
Wilson’s prospects are further buoyed by the weak quarterback class in the upcoming draft. Even if a team like the Tennessee Titans selects a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, there’s no guarantee that the rookie will be ready to start in Week 1. That’s where a player like Wilson could fill the gap.
While it may not be the Titans specifically, there are enough quarterback vacancies across the league to suggest Wilson could find a home for at least one more season. However, if he fails to perform in 2025, the emergence of a stronger quarterback draft class in 2026 could jeopardize his future as a starter.
Justin Fields’ Affordable Market Value Aligns With Steelers’ Plans
According to Spotrac, Justin Fields’ market value currently sits at $8.9 million annually, reflecting how the league views his overall body of work.
While it’s possible Fields could secure a deal exceeding $10 million per year due to market demand, his projected cost is still significantly lower than other quarterbacks. This makes him an attractive option for the Steelers, particularly given his familiarity with Arthur Smith’s offensive system and his potential for growth.
Fields has already shown he can win games with the support of Pittsburgh’s strong defense. Moreover, his affordability could allow the Steelers to address other areas of need without overextending financially.
As Dulac pointed out, the dots connecting Fields and the Steelers in 2025 align perfectly. For Wilson, however, this situation casts serious doubt on his future in Pittsburgh.
