49ers Brock Purdy Strong Message to Nick Bosa, Defense….

Last season, the 49ers defense was among the NFL’s best at forcing turnovers, recording 28 throughout the year, which averaged to 1.6 per game, placing them fifth in the league. On the offensive side, they were equally efficient, committing just 18 turnovers, or 1.1 per game, which ranked sixth in the NFL.

This season, however, with the team struggling at a disappointing 2-3 record through five weeks, the defense continues to hold up its part of the turnover battle, still forcing 1.6 turnovers per game. The issue lies with the offense, which has regressed, also giving up 1.6 turnovers per game, ranking 26th in the league.

After a frustrating loss to the Cardinals, star defensive end Nick Bosa emphasized the need for the 49ers to return to playing “complementary football.” Nowhere is that more evident than in the turnover game.

Brock Purdy: ‘It’s a Team Sport’

Here’s what Bosa had to say regarding the 49ers’ current situation, via Niners Nation:

“It’s pretty simple in the NFL. Turnovers, not playing complementary football. … Since Kyle (Shanahan) has taken over, this organization has always found ways to win. It’s not just about how talented your players are or how explosive the offense or defense is. If you’re turning the ball over and not making critical defensive plays, it’s tough to win in the NFL.”

Bosa acknowledges the defense’s responsibility to make plays, but he’s clear that the offense’s turnover increase is making things difficult.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was also asked for his thoughts on complementary football this week. His response to Bosa and the defense was straightforward: The offense needs to capitalize better on its opportunities.

“It’s a team sport,” Purdy said. “For four quarters, when the defense makes a stop, the offense has to step up and put points on the board. And when we’re rolling, if the defense gets a stop and special teams contribute, that’s complementary football. That’s how you win in this league.

“If the defense is stopping opponents but the offense is struggling, it’s obvious to everyone that it’s tough to find rhythm, and you end up letting teams stay in the game.”

49ers Still in Good Position

Despite their struggles, the 49ers are not in a terrible spot. Losses to the Cardinals and Rams are frustrating, but a win against the Seahawks would pull them into a tie with Seattle for first place in the NFC West.

For a team like the 49ers, coming off a Super Bowl appearance, the first month of the season is less important. What matters is how they play down the stretch. The key is to make it to the playoffs, and go from there.

“I think this season is all about momentum, staying healthy, and preparing for the next game,” Purdy said. “For us, it’s one game at a time. We’re not looking too far ahead. Whoever is next on the schedule, that’s who we’re focused on. We’ve just got to win.”
