The 49ers signed DT Sebastian Joseph-Day Could it have something to do with Arik Armstead’s health or how the backup defensive tackles performed on Monday night?

Former New England Patriots linebacker Jason McCourty is now in the media, tweeting that the San Francisco 49ers are signing defensive end Sebastian Joseph-Day.

Joseph-Day has started 30 games over the last two years for the Los Angeles Chargers. He played 542 snaps this season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Joseph-Day has had at least 35 field goals in all but three games this year.

Joseph-Day has five tackles for loss and three sacks on the season.

The 310-pounder should provide the 49ers with some much-needed meat as Arik Armstead improves.

On Monday night, Kevin Givens and T.Y. McGill had both 23 and 22 snaps.

Other than Javon Hargrave and Javon Kinlaw, there were no other options at the position.

With the Chargers, he moved primarily from running back and had to rush the pass more due to injuries.

Joseph-Day’s role with the Niners will likely be as a rotational quarterback. This helps keep Givens fresh.

At this point, the 49ers might be better off resting Armstead until the playoffs if the injury continues to plague him.

Perhaps this is a reason to add another piece of protective equipment.
