“Heartbroken” might be the best word to describe the Detroit Lions’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

After leading by 17 points at halftime, the Lions squandered the entire lead in the third quarter and ultimately lost by just three points. One of the most talked about topics after the loss was Dan Campbell’s two field goals on fourth down plays.

The first came in the third quarter when the Lions had fourth-and-2 from the 49ers’ 28-yard line, and the other came on fourth-and-3 in the final period when San Francisco already had the lead. Both decisions resulted in incomplete passes, and the 49ers scored on both subsequent possessions.

As mentioned, many Detroit fans expressed regret over Campbell’s important decision, considering the Lions lost by just three points. Tom Brady also got involved.

After being declared the winner, Brady praised the Lions’ aggressiveness but also made it clear that he would have scored the points himself. “They’ve been aggressive all year,” Brady said, via Scott Polachek of Bleacher Report.

He said, “Obviously you’ve been aggressive, but you know that if it doesn’t work, it comes back to bite you. Yesterday he came back to bite them. “I’ll score points this time too.”

Despite the loss, Dan Campbell’s performance for the Lions this year will be memorable. After leading his team to two playoff wins and their first division title in decades, Campbell still has accomplishments to be proud of this season.

Detroit is currently entering the offseason. But Lions fans, knowing the team’s capabilities, are looking forward to 2024.
