Former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was somewhat unceremoniously released from his duties after 14 seasons at the helm, including two Super Bowl appearances with one win and ten overall playoff appearances. Carroll has been with the Seahawks since 2010, compiling a 137–89 record since taking the job. He is the winningest coach in the franchise’s history and led the organization to its first-ever Super Bowl win after the 2013 season.

Carroll was “reassigned” to the role of advisor and vice president of football operations, but given the opportunity, one wonders if he’d get back into coaching. According to 49ers announcer Greg Papa on Rich’s show Eisen last week, one scenario that might not sit well with Seahawks fans is Carroll going to the rival San Francisco 49ers to fill the vacant defensive coordinator position. “I think Pete Carroll would be a better fit,” he said. “With Belichick, he likes to change his stance.

It’s going to be a very different defense… and at the end of the day, you want them to get the most out of their players, whoever their names are. So Fred [Warner], what is the best defense that Dre can run? [Greenlaw], Nick [Bose], Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir and Talanoa Hufanga? That’s who you’re trying to serve.

“The defense the Niners have been running is the Seattle defense since Kyle took over as coach. This is Seattle’s defense. And he’s the one who did it. He’s been away from that for the past few years. He’s from the Bay Area. He was the Niners’ defensive coordinator. But would Pete want to do that? He has been coaching at the head coach level for 20 years. He hasn’t led a defense since he played for the Niners in the mid-90s. So I don’t know.”

If Carroll really wants to get back into coaching, what better way to do that than to help former rival Kyle Shanahan get over the Super Bowl hump by taking on a defense that’s already ranked high in most statistical categories?
