Why’d Whitt Leave Dallas For Commanders?

Shortly after the Dallas Cowboys introduced Mike Zimmer as their defensive coordinator, the Washington Commanders also announced their new defensive coordinator.

Head coach Dan Quinn welcomed Joe Whitt Jr., the former Cowboys secondary coach and pass-game coordinator, to his staff. Both coaches left Dallas for promotions within the division and will now face their former teammates twice a season.

Some have questioned why Whitt, who expressed his desire to work at ‘The Star,’ left Dallas.

During the press conference, Whitt discussed his decision to join Quinn in Washington and the defensive strategy he plans to implement. His strong relationship with Quinn was a major factor in his decision, emphasizing Quinn’s exceptional character as a person rather than just a coach.

Whitt was eager to become an NFL defensive coordinator and saw this opportunity as the right time to do so.

His coaching career began before moving to the NFL in 2007 and he later reunited with Quinn in 2020.

Whitt spent most of his coaching years with the Green Bay Packers, holding various coaching positions.

The decision to leave Dallas for Washington was influenced by the job security Quinn offered, which may not have been guaranteed under Mike McCarthy in Dallas.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys, Whitt can expect stability in his role with the Commanders, barring any unforeseen issues.
