Two of the Detroit Lions’ most important offensive players—tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs—are questionable going into the 2024 season due to injuries.

At some point during training camp, Gibbs and LaPorta experienced a hamstring strain during practice. Head coach Dan Campbell provided some encouraging news about both last week, stating that he anticipated their return to practice this week. According to Erik Schlitt of Pride of Detroit, Campbell stated, “We’re hoping the day after the Pittsburgh game—I think we’re going to get a lot of guys back.”

“Samday, (Kevin) Zeitler, and Skip (Dan Skipper) are our top targets.” and I think we may start (DJ) Reader up too. Start working him in individuals. So we’re hoping to get a whole group of guys back on Sunday.”

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell provided yet another positive update for both players.

Injury updates for Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta LaPorta and Gibbs are expected to play in Week 1 after returning to practice on Sunday, according to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News.

LaPorta and Gibbs, who just finished incredible rookie campaigns in which they were both selected for the Pro Bowl, will be important contributors on what should once again be among the top offenses in the NFL in 2024.

In 2023, LaPorta caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the PPR rankings, he was TE1 overall, and among rookie tight ends in league history, his receptions, yards, and touchdowns were first, fourth, and tied for first, respectively.

Gibbs, however, missed two games but still managed 1,261 yards (945 rushing) from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns. In 2024, he should play a more significant role, particularly as a pass-catcher.
