As Pressure Mount, Two-Time All-Pro RB and NFL Analyst Proposes Blockbuster Trade: Dolphins RB to the 49ers

With Christian McCaffrey’s future uncertain, a former two-time All-Pro running back and current NFL Network analyst is stirring up excitement with a bold trade idea: Miami Dolphins star RB Raheem Mostert could be headed back to the San Francisco 49ers.

As the 49ers face mounting pressure in their backfield, this trade could reunite Mostert with Kyle Shanahan, reviving memories of their dominant 2019 run. Could this be the key move that propels San Francisco to Super Bowl glory?

The clock is ticking—will the 49ers make a play for the Dolphins’ touchdown leader?

“With no guarantee that the reigning Offensive Player of the Year will play again this season, and Mason’s recent injury scare, Shanahan might need to bolster his backfield,” MJD wrote on October 16. “Mostert and Wilson are experienced veterans who could provide solid depth for the 49ers. Plus, the Dolphins have two promising young running backs: second-year standout De’Von Achane and rookie Jaylen Wright.”

Jones-Drew presents a strong argument for why bringing Mostert back makes sense, and why Miami could be willing to make a deal. Mostert would give the 49ers a familiar face who understands Kyle Shanahan’s system, potentially at a low cost.

While it’s just speculation for now, several factors suggest this move could be a real possibility.

Mostert’s Time with the 49ers

Mostert began making a bigger impact in San Francisco in 2019 after a few years of limited contributions in the NFL. Following a 261-yard season in 2018, the former Purdue Boilermaker put up 952 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019.

In 2020, Mostert had a strong showing with 677 total yards and 3 touchdowns, though injuries limited him to just eight games. His injury issues persisted in 2021, eventually leading him to join the Dolphins.

Although Mostert impressed during his time with the 49ers, his best seasons have come in 2022 and 2023. He recorded 1,093 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns in 2022.

In 2023, Mostert led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns and ran for 1,012 yards, though he missed a couple of games due to injury.

In 2024, Mostert has struggled with injuries but was healthy for Miami’s Week 5 win over the New England Patriots, rushing for 80 yards and catching two passes for 18 yards.

49ers Receive Positive News on RB

When 49ers RB Jordan Mason was injured during the team’s 36-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks, there was significant concern. With McCaffrey already sidelined, losing Mason—who had been performing well in his absence—would be a big setback.

Although Mason left the game in the second half, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a positive update afterward.

“In case of an emergency, he stayed available,” Shanahan explained. “…He thought he’d be alright. He went back in, but the pain was too much, so he came out. I think that was on the first play, and then he was on the sideline for the rest of the game.”

It looks like Mason will be fine for the long term, but his status will be something to keep an eye on as the 49ers prepare for their Week 7 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
