NFL Response To The Latest Off-Field Issue Involving Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams

The Detroit Lions continue to face challenges with Williams, whose NFL career has been turbulent since the start. After entering the league with a significant injury, he missed multiple games in 2023 due to a violation of the NFL’s gambling policy. Now, while serving a suspension related to the NFL’s PED policy, Williams is in the news for an encounter with the police.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the league has released a brief statement on the matter but offered little detail.

“The Lions promptly notified the league upon learning of the matter,” the statement reads. “We have no further comment at this time.”

This incident surfaced Tuesday evening, with reports stating Williams was almost arrested by Detroit Police after a firearm was discovered in his vehicle. The weapon belongs to Williams, though he lacks a Concealed Pistol License, a legal requirement that could have led to his immediate arrest.

The Detroit Police are now investigating the officers’ decision to release Williams without arresting him.

“Jameson informed us promptly that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We spoke with him about the incident and kept the league updated with the details we have,” a Lions representative stated. “Our understanding is that he was released without incident or citation.

It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is revisiting the matter. Jameson has retained legal counsel, and out of respect for the legal process, we will make no further comment.”

Williams is currently serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s PED policy, missing Detroit’s Week 8 victory over the Titans. He opted not to contest the suspension and will also be sidelined for Detroit’s critical Week 9 matchup against Green Bay.
