After a 7 News Detroit report revealed that Detroit police are investigating why Lions WR Jameson Williams wasn’t arrested following the discovery of a gun under his seat during a recent traffic stop, fan responses have been swift. Detroit police probe potential preferential treatment in traffic stop involving Lions WR Jameson Williams
While some fans express disappointment, others show support for the 23-year-old receiver. In Detroit, where the Lions’ success is a point of pride, news involving star players like Williams travels fast.
“Obviously he’s a star on the field and we need him as part of our Super Bowl run,” said Chase Chapman, a fan from White Lake.
Williams, currently experiencing his best season with the Lions, is also serving a 2-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Last season, he missed four games due to a suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy. Now, fans are learning of potential felony charges for carrying a concealed weapon.
“It kinda seems like it’s been one thing after another,” Chapman added. “But you know? I believe in the kid; we’ve seen a lot of progress from him.”
Lions fan Aaron Lowery of Detroit shared a similar sentiment, saying, “I think they’re going to have to be patient with him, he’s growing. But he’s only got so many more chances.”
Fans are also reacting to the internal investigation into whether Williams received special treatment from police due to his status as a player.
“Just because you’re an athlete with a certain status, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t face the consequences,” said Vincent Richardson, a Detroit fan.
As fans react, many still hold out hope, eager to see Williams move past these issues and remain focused on the Lions’ Super Bowl ambitions.
“I believe in our legal system, I believe Jameson Williams is a good guy, I believe he has good character. I believe he’s come along since he joined the team,” Chapman commented.
Lowery added, “Give him another chance and see what he does, because he is a big help to the squad.”
