The San Francisco 49ers have assembled a championship-caliber team, but they may need some extra pieces to extend their title window.
Following a significant win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that brought their record to 5-4, the 49ers are cautiously looking ahead, even as the 2025 free agency period remains distant. With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department suggests that Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle B.J. Hill could be an ideal target.
“The 49ers should consider bolstering their defensive line in free agency. B.J. Hill from Cincinnati could fit well into San Francisco’s 4-3 base scheme,” says a Bleacher Report article from November 11. “Defensive tackle Kevin Givens is set to enter free agency, and Javon Hargrave is currently sidelined with a season-ending triceps injury. While the 49ers are projected to have $44.5 million in 2025 cap space, they might also need to work on a contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy.”
Hill brings both experience and affordability, potentially offering a younger and more cost-effective option than Hargrave. Cutting Hargrave would free up additional cap space, making someone like Hill an appealing option.
Hill’s Background and Journey
A former standout at NC State, Hill was drafted in the third round by the New York Giants. His rookie season in 2018 was strong, with 5.5 sacks and two passes defended. However, over the next two seasons, he only started five games and saw limited playing time, leading to a trade to the Bengals in 2021.
Initially a backup with Cincinnati, Hill posted another 5.5-sack season and made a crucial interception during the Bengals’ 27-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bengals signed him to a three-year, $30 million contract in the 2022 offseason. Since then, Hill has started 44 games, with 8.5 sacks, 16 passes defended, and two interceptions. Although he’s proven valuable, Cincinnati has yet to negotiate an extension, making it increasingly likely that Hill will become available in 2025.
49ers’ Dilemma: Hargrave or Hill?
With Hargrave sidelined for the 2024 season, San Francisco may reevaluate his future. As per Spotrac, Hargrave’s cap hit will be $28.1 million in 2025. Although he contributed solidly in 2023, his cap figure is substantial, and he’ll be 32 in the 2025 offseason.
By designating him as a post-June 1 cut, the 49ers could save over $20 million, though they’d still have an $8 million cap charge. Adding Hill at a lower cost could provide similar production and offer the team valuable savings.
