Daniel Jones’ tenure with the New York Giants has officially come to an end. After being benched, used as a scout team safety during practice, and requesting his release, Jones is set to land with a new team. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, once Jones clears waivers on Monday, he reportedly prefers to finish the season with a playoff contender.
FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz has reported that the Detroit Lions are one of several teams expected to pursue Jones.
“There has been significant interest in former Giants QB Daniel Jones since his release. Once he clears waivers, expect the Ravens, Vikings, Lions, 49ers, and Dolphins to pursue him—not only for a chance to join a contending team but also to develop in an offensive system where he can learn and grow,” Schultz said.
“A decision could come as early as this week, sources say.”
While the Lions have Jared Goff firmly established as their starting quarterback, their backup situation is less stable. Rookie Hendon Hooker lacks experience, raising questions about how he might perform if called upon to start.
Lions Look Like an Ideal Fit for Daniel Jones
Drafted sixth overall in 2019, Jones started 69 regular-season games over six seasons with the Giants. His best year came in 2022, when he passed for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. That season, the Giants made the playoffs and won a Wild Card game against the Minnesota Vikings.
This year, Jones has played in 10 games, throwing for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions as the Giants stumbled to a 2-8 start.
Given the success Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has had with Jared Goff—who was at a similar career crossroads when he joined Detroit—Sports Illustrated’s John Maakaron speculated about the Lions’ interest in Jones even before this report emerged.
On one hand, Jones may prioritize landing somewhere he can play immediately, giving him an opportunity to rebuild his value before entering free agency in the offseason. However, if his focus is on joining a playoff team and developing within a strong offensive system, the Lions present an intriguing opportunity. They may even be the most ideal fit for his needs.
