The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly eyeing a major offseason move to address their struggling defense, with a star player from the San Francisco 49ers potentially in their sights.
It’s been a disastrous season for the Cowboys, setting the stage for a busy offseason at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to depart, along with significant portions of the roster and coaching staff. While core players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons will remain, the organization faces the challenge of building a competitive team around them.
The defense, in particular, has been a glaring weakness. Once known for their explosive plays, the unit has faltered this season. To turn things around, the Cowboys might look to bolster their roster by targeting one of their NFC rivals.
On Monday, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report predicted that the Cowboys could pursue San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw in free agency. Greenlaw, recovering from a Super Bowl injury, could provide a significant upgrade to Dallas’ struggling defense.
“Dallas’ defense entered this weekend ranked 31st in the NFL for points allowed, and there is speculation that the entire coaching staff could be replaced at the end of the season,” Holder stated. “The front office might be in the market for a veteran linebacker this spring. Greenlaw is coming off a torn Achilles but returned to practice this week. At his best, the six-year veteran is a top-tier linebacker who excels in coverage and against the run.”
Greenlaw, 27, has earned a spot on the NFL’s Top 100 Players list for two consecutive seasons, as voted by his peers. He emerged as a breakout star during the 2023 playoffs, recording two interceptions against the Green Bay Packers before suffering an injury in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.
While adding a veteran with Greenlaw’s potential could be a game-changer for Dallas, it would come at a cost. Greenlaw’s next deal is likely to exceed his previous $8 million annual salary, and the Cowboys would need to be confident in his ability to return to peak form post-injury.
