Kansas City Chiefs starting left tackle D.J. Humphries suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14. The injury occurred in the second half, and Humphries did not return to the game.
After the game, head coach Andy Reid did not provide an update on Humphries’ condition but commended the veteran for his performance in his first game of the 2024 NFL season.
“I think initially it was fast for him. But then he settled down, and I thought in the second half he played well… which I figured would happen,” Reid said during his postgame press conference.
Although Humphries’ status remains uncertain, Reid’s lack of concern during his comments suggests the injury may not keep the veteran sidelined for long, if at all.
Chiefs Secure Another Dramatic Victory
In a defensive battle between division rivals, the Chiefs narrowly edged out the Chargers with a 31-yard field goal from Matthew Wright. The kick, which hit the left upright before going through as time expired, secured the win.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 24 of 37 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown, adding 17 yards on four rushes. Tight end Travis Kelce led Kansas City’s receivers with five catches on six targets for 45 yards. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins caught Mahomes’ lone touchdown pass, finishing with four receptions for 32 yards and a score. Running back Isiah Pacheco led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 55 yards.
Defensively, the Chiefs limited the Chargers to 288 total yards, recorded three sacks on quarterback Justin Herbert, and held the Chargers to a 6-of-13 conversion rate on third downs. The defense also allowed only 3.9 yards per rushing attempt, according to ESPN.
The win clinched Kansas City’s ninth consecutive AFC West division title and improved their record to 12-1 on the season.
Fans React to Chiefs’ Victory
Fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared their thoughts on the Chiefs’ Week 14 win over the Chargers.
“Watching an @Chiefs game is like watching the ‘Angels in the Outfield’ movie,” one user commented. “Especially when you see stuff like the ball hitting the goalpost and then bouncing through… wonder if some kids are seeing the Angel carrying that ball through?”
“Happy for the #Chiefs win, but not sure about the last 2 minutes of play,” another user wrote. “Trailing by a point, in striking distance of a touchdown, and running the clock down for a field goal. If you miss (Doink Kick), you lose the game.”
“A thin line divides victory and defeat,” one fan observed. “In the NFL, talent abounds, and anyone can claim the win. Health is the family’s heartfelt wish, and the team’s support is a steadfast guide. Win the games that matter most, for your efforts deserve all praise and pride.”
“My late friend Keisha is celebrating in Heaven,” one post read. “She was a die-hard fan and season ticket holder. She may have lost her battle with cancer, but she cheered her team on until her last breath.”
“Two games won by 13 points, one by 10, and all the rest were one-score games,” another fan noted. “Most were decided by 3 points or less, including the last two by only 2 points. Good thing they’re first in the AFC because that’s the only way they’re making it to Week 2 of the playoffs—they can’t score.”
