The Buffalo Bills squandered a record-setting performance from quarterback Josh Allen on Sunday, failing to stop the Los Angeles Rams from scoring in a 44-42 loss.
The defeat significantly hurt Buffalo’s chances of overtaking the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC’s top seed. However, with the Bills having clinched the AFC East last week, their playoff position remains intact, though improvements are necessary.
One analyst believes the Bills could strengthen their defense by adding an experienced All-Pro defensive back who is still available on the market.
Bills Urged to Sign Former Rival
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report suggested the Bills should consider signing former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard. The 31-year-old free agent could be a key addition for a team aiming to make a deep playoff run.
“This might be the moment that pushes the Bills to seriously explore adding another defensive back,” Ballentine wrote. “This team is tantalizingly close to making a Super Bowl run, but there are still a few areas that need refinement.”
Ballentine added that bringing in Howard would be “an affordable way to give the Bills an extra edge.” He noted that Howard performed well in his last NFL season, holding opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of 81.3 when targeted in 2023.
While the Bills’ defense has been solid overall, it has shown vulnerabilities against high-powered offenses, allowing 44 points to the Rams and 35 to the Baltimore Ravens in recent games.
Bills Brought Back Another Veteran Defensive Back
The Bills have already taken steps to bolster their secondary, recently bringing back veteran safety Micah Hyde on a practice squad deal. Hyde, who had hinted at a potential return, joined the squad with the backing of Bills general manager Brandon Beane.
Head coach Sean McDermott emphasized that Hyde’s role is to provide depth rather than address any deficiencies among the team’s active safeties.
“Just to set expectations, Micah is in a practice squad role,” McDermott said, via ESPN. “We have full confidence in Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, Cole Bishop, and Kareem Jackson. They’ve all been doing a really good job in their current roles, and that’s not changing. Micah’s addition is purely for depth.”
Hyde expressed satisfaction with his new role, focusing on mentoring the team’s younger players. While currently on the practice squad, Hyde remains an option for game-day activations, with three elevations available for the final four regular-season games and additional opportunities in the playoffs.
“I just wanted to come back and contribute in any way I could,” Hyde said. “Whether it’s guiding young players, helping veterans fine-tune their game, or offering insights on and off the field, I’m here to assist. This is a new role for me, and I’m ready to embrace it and excel.”
