The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have solidified their quarterback position this season, with Russell Wilson proving to be a valuable addition seven starts into his tenure.
The season began with Justin Fields at quarterback after Wilson was sidelined by an injury in training camp. Fields led the team to a respectable 4-2 record, performing admirably. However, Wilson’s return has elevated Pittsburgh’s passing game, providing the offense with a more balanced attack.
Despite their current success, the Steelers face uncertainty at quarterback beyond this season. Fields is expected to seek a starting opportunity elsewhere, and Wilson, who is also a free agent, will turn 37 next year, raising questions about his long-term future in the league.
Given this uncertainty, A.J. Schulte of AtoZ Sports suggests the Steelers should look toward the 2025 NFL Draft for their quarterback of the future. Schulte projects Pittsburgh selecting Drew Allar, a quarterback from Penn State, with the 27th overall pick.
Allar enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, completing 69.1% of his passes for 2,894 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also contributed 279 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Over his career at Penn State, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound quarterback has amassed 61 total touchdowns, 5,869 passing yards, 537 rushing yards, and a 63.6% completion rate. Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network highlights his potential in a recent scouting report, noting that opinions vary on whether Allar is a first-round talent.
While Schulte views Allar as a solid option late in the first round, Fowler sees him as a player worthy of higher consideration.
Assuming Pittsburgh can re-sign Wilson, the team is not in a position where it must reach for a quarterback in the draft. However, if general manager Omar Khan believes in Allar’s potential, selecting him could provide the Steelers with a head start on securing their long-term future at the position. Otherwise, prioritizing a player who can make a more immediate impact might be the wiser choice.
