On Sunday, the Detroit Lions suffered their second loss of the season to the Buffalo Bills in a high-scoring showdown that ended 48-42.
By Monday morning, the pain of that defeat deepened with the announcement that running back David Montgomery would be out indefinitely due to an MCL injury. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Montgomery will undergo season-ending surgery.
This news is a significant blow to the entire team, but it hits especially hard for fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The duo, affectionately dubbed “Sonic” and “Knuckles” due to their strong bond, had become a driving force for Detroit’s offense.
Following the news, Gibbs took to Instagram, sharing a photo of the two with a broken heart emoji—reflecting his sorrow and support for his teammate.
Gibbs and Montgomery have been integral to the Lions’ success this season, helping the team achieve impressive rushing stats. Detroit ranks fifth in total rushing yards (2,012), eighth in yards per carry (4.7), fourth in rushing touchdowns (17), and fourth in rushing first downs (118) in the NFL.
Montgomery’s season comes to an end with notable numbers: 775 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns, 4.2 yards per carry, 36 receptions, and 341 receiving yards.
With Montgomery sidelined, the “next man up” is Craig Reynolds, who has just 566 rushing yards and 1 touchdown across six seasons.
