Sam Darnold to the Jets in a Potential Reunion

Jan 29, 2025 #Sam Darnold

Two of the NFL’s premier quarterbacks are set to square off in Super Bowl LIX, battling for this year’s most coveted trophy. Once the confetti settles and a champion is crowned, attention will quickly shift to the 2025 offseason, which has the potential to spark a significant wave of quarterback movement.

With several high-profile signal-callers on track to hit free agency in March and others potentially available via trade, this offseason could reshape multiple franchises.

With that in mind, we took on the role of matchmaker, pairing 17 different veteran quarterbacks with potential landing spots ahead of the 2025 market. These scenarios range from blockbuster reunions to strategic backup swaps, with each move carrying major implications for the teams involved.

Sam Darnold Returns to the Jets

Newly appointed head coach Aaron Glenn witnessed firsthand in Detroit how a first-round castoff can find new life with the right system and coaching. His experience with Jared Goff, who revitalized his career after being traded from the Rams, could influence his approach to New York’s quarterback situation.

Darnold, despite a tumultuous first stint with the Jets, remains an intriguing option. His time in Carolina and San Francisco showcased glimpses of his potential when placed in a stable environment with competent play-calling and offensive support. If Gang Green is unable to secure a top quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft—either by staying put at No. 7 overall or attempting to trade up for an Aaron Rodgers successor—Darnold could emerge as a viable alternative.

Bringing him back to New York wouldn’t come without its risks, but the appeal lies in his familiarity with the organization and his potential to thrive under Glenn’s leadership. While he wouldn’t necessarily be the long-term answer, he could serve as a capable bridge quarterback, allowing the team to remain competitive while they continue their search for a franchise cornerstone under center.
