NBA All-Star Snubs, WNBA Expansion, and NBA Europe Developments

The 2025 NBA All-Star selections have sparked debate, as several high-profile guards were left off the rosters. According to Marc J. Spears of Andscape, the most glaring omissions include Trae Young, LaMelo Ball, Zach LaVine, and Tyrese Maxey in the Eastern Conference, while Kyrie Irving, Devin Booker, and Norman Powell were notable snubs in the West. Domantas Sabonis was the only big man included in Spears’ “All-Snub” team.

Meanwhile, WNBA expansion efforts are gaining traction, with several NBA team owners—including those of the Pistons, Sixers, Cavaliers, and Rockets—submitting bids for new franchises. Any new teams approved in this round of expansion would begin play in 2028.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has opted out of a proposed three-point contest at NBA All-Star weekend, choosing instead to debut in the WNBA’s All-Star contest later this year. This mirrors last year’s shootout between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.

On the international front, the NBA’s proposed professional league in Europe is taking shape, with commissioner Adam Silver and his leadership team heavily involved. Reports from ESPN and BasketNews indicate that the NBA’s focus on “NBA Europe” could potentially delay expansion efforts in North America.

Lastly, longtime NBA assistant coach Kaleb Canales is set to take over as head coach of the Calgary Surge in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. His new role will not interfere with a potential return to an NBA bench for the 2025-26 season.

These developments highlight the growing influence of basketball globally, the increasing integration of the NBA and WNBA, and the competitive nature of All-Star selections.
