Phoenix Mercury Form New Big 3 with Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas

The Phoenix Mercury are making bold moves to reshape their roster, forming a new “Big 3” with Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally, and Alyssa Thomas. After trading for Thomas earlier in the week, the Merc secured Sabally on Friday, adding another versatile and elite talent to their core.

The Impact of Sabally and Thomas

Sabally, a 6-foot-4 wing, brings length, scoring ability, and defensive versatility—an area where Phoenix struggled last season. Her collegiate success at Oregon, alongside New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, highlighted her ability to play in an up-tempo, high-powered offense.

Thomas, a perennial MVP contender, is a game-changer. She ranked second in the WNBA in assists per game (7.9) and adds leadership, rebounding, and defensive intensity. Her connection to Phoenix extends beyond the court, as she’s engaged to former Mercury star DeWanna Bonner—who, according to reports, could also return to the team.

With three recent All-WNBA players in Copper, Sabally, and Thomas, the Mercury are positioning themselves as serious contenders. If Bonner joins, Phoenix would boast an elite lineup capable of making a deep playoff run.

Saying Goodbye to Fan Favorites

Phoenix fans will also have to bid farewell to key players. Natasha Cloud, the team’s emotional leader and defensive anchor, has joined the Connecticut Sun. The sharpshooting Bec Allen is also headed to Connecticut, while Sophie Cunningham—who spent her entire WNBA career with the Mercury—now joins Caitlin Clark in Indiana. Cunningham’s fiery personality and media presence will be missed in Phoenix, but she’s set up for a strong season with the Fever.

What’s Next for Phoenix?

The Mercury’s front office has been aggressive in its pursuit of a championship-caliber roster. With three elite players locked in and potential moves still on the horizon, Phoenix is shaping up to be a legitimate title contender. Stay tuned for further analysis as the team continues to build its new identity.
