The Mystics’ Silence Is More Concerning Than Their Lack of Publicized Moves

There’s no doubt the Mystics are actively working behind the scenes. However, the bigger issue isn’t just the lack of reported moves—it’s the absence of clear communication about the team’s direction.

WNBA teams can now officially announce signings, and several major deals have already been made. But so far, the Mystics haven’t been involved in any of them. Fans on social media are questioning whether the team is “asleep at the wheel.” I don’t think that’s the right concern. The front office is certainly engaged in free agency and filling out the staff for the 2025 season.

The real question is about optics. Why has the introductory press conference taken so long?

Originally scheduled for last Thursday, the event was postponed due to the American Airlines and Army helicopter collision. That press conference was set to introduce General Manager Jamila Wideman and Head Coach Sydney Johnson, led by Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger. Even if it had happened as planned, it still would have been over a month since their hirings were announced.

Delaying an introductory press conference around Christmas and New Year’s is understandable, but the Mystics could—and should—have held it sooner. Doing so would have provided fans with much-needed clarity on the team’s plans for 2025, the pivotal 2026 free agency period, and beyond.Instead, Mystics fans are left guessing. Should the press conference have been scheduled earlier than Jan. 30? And if it were happening today, what key questions would you ask Winger, Wideman, and Johnson?
