Lions’ Tough Decision: How Much Is Levi Onwuzurike Worth?

Feb 3, 2025 #Levi Onwuzurike

The Detroit Lions’ 2021 draft class has produced several key building blocks for the franchise.

Penei Sewell, Alim McNeill, and Amon-Ra St. Brown have all signed contract extensions to remain with the team long-term. However, as other members of that class approach the end of their rookie deals, the Lions face important decisions.

One of those decisions involves defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, the team’s second-round pick in 2021, who is set to become a free agent this offseason. Onwuzurike presents an intriguing case—he possesses significant potential as a defensive playmaker but has dealt with durability concerns throughout his career.

As a rookie, Onwuzurike played in 16 games despite missing part of training camp due to injury. Unfortunately, he missed his entire second season with a back injury, and the issue lingered into 2023, limiting him to 10 games. However, he fully recovered ahead of the 2024 training camp.

Onwuzurike had an impressive camp and went on to start 10 of his 16 games in 2024. He stayed healthy all season, playing a crucial role in the defensive line’s success, especially as Detroit dealt with injuries to key players like McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson.

His biggest impact has come as an interior pass rusher, leading the team with 47 pressures this season. He also recorded 1.5 sacks and a team-high 14 quarterback hits.

Given his potential, the Lions have plenty of incentive to keep him. They supported him through his injury struggles, and his strong showing in his fourth NFL season suggests his best football is still ahead.

Projecting his market value is challenging. The price tag for defensive tackles has risen significantly, with Chris Jones of Kansas City setting the standard at $31.8 million per year.

Detroit has already committed to McNeill, making him the fourth-highest-paid defensive tackle with an annual salary of $24.25 million. While Onwuzurike doesn’t have McNeill’s overall production, his ability to generate pressure from the interior boosts his value.

With the growing demand for pass-rushing defensive tackles, Onwuzurike could command a sizable contract—potentially around $15 million per year.

If the Lions choose to bring him back, they’ll be making a sizable investment, banking on his continued development under new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.

Predicted contract: Three years, $42 million
