Proposed Trade Flip Eagles Rookie CB for NFL Defensive Player of the Year

Feb 5, 2025

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the most aggressive front offices in the NFL, led by owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman. With their combination of bold decision-making, financial resources, and experience, they are capable of pulling off major trades at any time.

Even as the Eagles prepare for Super Bowl LIX on February 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, their front office is always thinking ahead. A blockbuster trade opportunity could ensure the team remains a championship contender for years to come.

On The Ringer’s Philly Special podcast, a trade proposal was suggested that would send Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean and a first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for six-time All-Pro and 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

“I would do DeJean and a one,” The Ringer’s Sheil Kapadia said on February 4. “I’m telling you, this has Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie written all over it. If there’s a trade to be made, they’re all over the difficult stuff. Salary, cap, you can figure it all out. You can do void years until 2050 or whatever the NFL allows.”

Garrett Requests Trade to a Contender

Garrett announced on February 3 that he was seeking a trade after the Browns finished the 2024 season with a disappointing 3-14 record. His request comes with the intention of joining a Super Bowl contender.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent,” Garrett said in a statement released to ESPN. “The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”

Eagles in Need of an Elite Pass Rusher

The Eagles are expected to lose their top edge rusher from 2024, Josh Sweat, who played on a one-year, $10 million contract and is now set to command a massive deal in free agency.

Another possible trade piece in negotiations with Cleveland could be edge rusher Bryce Huff, who the Eagles signed to a three-year, $51.1 million contract in 2024 free agency. Huff underperformed in his first season in Philadelphia, recording just 2.5 sacks while missing five games due to a late-season wrist surgery.

Pairing Garrett with Jalen Carter—arguably the NFL’s best interior defensive lineman—could be too enticing for the Eagles to pass up. Carter, a 2023 first-round pick, earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2024 and is still on his rookie contract for one more season before Philadelphia will need to invest heavily in his future.

DeJean: Talented but Expendable

While DeJean has had an outstanding rookie season, the Eagles’ strong draft strategy makes him somewhat expendable—especially considering who they selected ahead of him.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, Philadelphia took Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell in the first round and DeJean out of Iowa in the second. Both players emerged as two of the best rookies in the NFL, with Mitchell establishing himself as the team’s clear CB1 moving forward.

With cornerback depth already in place, acquiring an elite edge rusher like Garrett could be the kind of move that keeps the Eagles in Super Bowl contention for years to come.
