The Detroit Lions are expected to make a significant investment in an edge rusher during the 2025 NFL offseason.
After struggling to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks throughout the 2024 season, addressing the pass rush has become a major priority.
Aidan Hutchinson led the team in sacks despite playing just five games, and there wasn’t a close second. With that in mind, Detroit will have several intriguing options available this offseason.
Both trade candidates and a deep free-agent class present potential solutions, and one standout name is a former Defensive Player of the Year.
In an analysis of the top free-agent defensive linemen, Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus highlighted the Lions as a prime landing spot for Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack.
Mack was dominant in 2023, posting 17 sacks, 74 total tackles, and five forced fumbles in his second season with the Chargers.
While his 2024 numbers weren’t as eye-popping, he still recorded six sacks, 49 pressures, and led all edge rushers with six batted passes, per PFF.
One key factor in his statistical decline? He played 318 fewer snaps in 2024.
Additionally, the Chargers reduced their blitz rate significantly, dropping from 31.5% in 2023 to 23.8% in 2024.
In contrast, the Lions had the second-highest blitz rate in the NFL at 34.6%. With more blitzing and opposing offenses focused on Hutchinson, Mack would have ample opportunities to disrupt backfields and boost his production in Detroit.
Though he comes with a hefty price tag, Mack could be a worthwhile investment as the Lions look to overhaul their defense following a disappointing playoff exit.
While he may not generate as much buzz as some trade targets, he stands out as one of the best free-agent options available—making him a player Detroit should strongly consider if they opt for a free-agent signing.
