The Detroit Lions experienced significant coaching changes this offseason, as offensive coordinator Ben Johnson departed to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn took the top job with the New York Jets. In response, the Lions promoted John Morton to offensive coordinator and named Kelvin Sheppard as their new defensive coordinator.
Losing both coordinators is far from ideal, as Johnson and Glenn were among the best assistant coaches in the league, playing crucial roles in elevating Detroit’s offense and defense.
Despite concerns about the coaching staff turnover, star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson remains unfazed. During a Feb. 19 appearance on The Lautners podcast, Hutchinson expressed confidence in the team’s ability to maintain success regardless of coaching changes.
“I don’t care who they bring in to coach us. Obviously, keeping Dan there is what we all want. But coordinators, position coaches—it doesn’t matter,” Hutchinson said. “As long as we have the right guys in the locker room and those foundation guys on offense and defense, you can roll anyone in there to call the plays.
“At the end of the day, it’s going to be the playmakers who are making those plays on Sundays. As long as we keep our core group and keep everyone there, we’re going to stay in this window of winning,” he added.
While Johnson and Glenn were instrumental to Detroit’s success, general manager Brad Holmes has built one of the deepest and most talented rosters in football.
Hutchinson’s remarks might appear to downplay the impact of the departed coordinators, but rather than diminishing their contributions, the 2022 No. 2 overall pick is emphasizing his belief in his teammates. With their strong core intact, Hutchinson is confident the Lions will remain a top contender in the NFC next season.
