Reports: Mercury Acquire Satou Sabally in Another Blockbuster Deal

According to multiple reports, the Phoenix Mercury have acquired two-time All-Star forward Satou Sabally from the Dallas Wings in a three-team trade on Friday night.

The Wings will receive point guard Ty Harris and forward Mikiah “Kiki” Herbert Harrigan from the Mercury, along with forward NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 pick in this year’s draft from the Indiana Fever.

Meanwhile, the Fever will acquire guard Sophie Cunningham and the No. 19 pick this year from Phoenix, while the Mercury will add center Kalani Brown and point guard Sevgi Uzun from Dallas.

This trade is the latest in a series of major moves in recent weeks, continuing the shake-up involving the Mercury.

Just days earlier, 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner left Phoenix—the team that drafted her No. 1 overall in 2013—to sign a free-agent deal with the Atlanta Dream.

The Mercury also made headlines on Tuesday by acquiring five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun in a separate deal. That trade also brought Harris to Phoenix.

Dallas had previously designated Sabally as their core player, a designation similar to the franchise tag in the NFL. With Sabally making it clear at the end of last season that she was ready to move on from the Wings, a trade became the most likely outcome.

Sabally, 26, was limited to just 15 games in 2024 due to a shoulder injury but still averaged 17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. In the previous season, she posted career-best numbers of 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, earning the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award. Through five seasons, the former Oregon standout has career averages of 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 97 games, with 87 starts.

Harris, 26, spent her first three seasons with Dallas before playing the last two in Connecticut. She has career averages of 6.6 points and 2.6 assists while shooting 38.3% from three-point range.

Herbert Harrigan, 26, has played in 53 games with three starts over three WNBA seasons, spending time with Minnesota, Seattle, and Phoenix. Last season, she averaged 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 31 games with the Mercury.

Smith, 24, had a down year in 2024, averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in 24.8 minutes per game—his lowest numbers so far. The previous season, she put up 15.5 points and 9.2 rebounds in 28.5 minutes per game.
