The Boston Red Sox have finally signed a free agent infielder, though it’s not the one fans have been waiting for. While star infielder Alex Bregman remains unsigned, the team agreed to a minor league deal with 28-year-old Abraham Toroqq on Tuesday, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Toro, a switch-hitter, has struggled at the plate throughout his career, slashing .220/.285/.353 in 334 at-bats. His addition to the roster raises more questions than answers about the team’s uncertainty at second base. However, Toro has also played first base, shortstop, and outfield during his time with the Astros, Mariners, Brewers, and Athletics.
In 2019, MLB Pipeline ranked Toro as the Astros’ No. 6 prospect, praising his switch-hitting, plate discipline, and defensive versatility. Despite this promise, Toro has yet to establish himself as an everyday Major League player.
During the 2024 season with the Athletics, Toro hit .240/.293/.350 with six home runs over 94 games.
His arrival adds to Boston’s crowded mix of second base candidates, which includes David Hamilton, Romy Gonzalez, and Vaughn Grissom. Meanwhile, contract negotiations with Alex Bregman remain at an impasse, as the Red Sox continue to hold firm on a maximum offer of four years.
Boston’s reluctance to commit big money and long-term contracts to star free agents is part of a broader spending reduction over the past five years, a strategy that has left the team in a three-year postseason drought.
