Maple Leafs Shock Fans with Potential Blockbuster Trade for Sabres’ $9M Star

The Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to bolster their forward lineup, but a recent trade suggestion involving the Buffalo Sabres could change that. A user on PuckPedia’s new PuckGM tool proposed a trade where the Maple Leafs would acquire Jordan Greenway from the Sabres.

Proposed Trade:

Maple Leafs Receive:
– Jordan Greenway ($1.5 million salary retained)

Sabres Receive:
– Pontus Holmberg
– 2025 second-round pick (Florida’s)

This deal seems logical as it would give Toronto a gritty, veteran forward in Greenway, who could enhance their bottom six scoring—a known weakness for the team. Buffalo would retain $1.5 million of Greenway’s $3 million salary as he enters the final year of his three-year, $9 million contract.

Greenway, with 52 goals and 99 assists in 401 NHL games, had 28 points last season with Buffalo. On the other hand, Holmberg, 25, would be a better fit with the Sabres’ young core and could see an increased role in Buffalo. He has one year left on his contract, paying $800,000, and posted 17 points in 54 games last season.

Maple Leafs GM Anticipates More Moves:
Toronto has been relatively quiet since their major additions of Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Anthony Stolarz on July 1. While there was speculation about trading Mitch Marner or John Tavares, no such moves have occurred. However, GM Brad Treliving hasn’t ruled out further changes before the season begins.

Treliving mentioned on TSN 1050’s OverDrive that the team is still evaluating options and isn’t locked in yet. He emphasized that making changes just for the sake of it doesn’t make sense unless it improves the team.

Sabres GM Eyes Playoff Push:
Buffalo’s GM, Kevyn Adams, has had an active offseason, signing forwards Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel, along with defenseman Dennis Gilbert, and trading for Beck Malenstyn and Ryan McLeod. With the Sabres not making the playoffs since 2010-11, Adams believes these moves make Buffalo a tougher opponent and hopes they’ll be contenders this season. Buffalo kicks off the 2024-25 NHL season on Oct. 4 against the New Jersey Devils.
