Trey Lance played extensively for the Dallas Cowboys throughout the preseason and ended up with a number of interceptions.
In the Chargers’ preseason finale against the Cowboys on Saturday, the third-string quarterback threw five interceptions, the latest coming on the penultimate play near the Los Angeles goal line. The Chargers won 26-19.
On LA’s opening play, Derius Davis raced 70 yards for a score; later in the half, Simi Fehoko received a 78-yard scoring throw.
With Dallas down a point in the fourth quarter, undrafted rookie Tre’mon Morris-Brash picked up a 25-yard touchdown pass as one of Lance’s five interceptions. Lance also ran for a touchdown and completed a pass for another score.
After Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, Lance will play as the third quarterback for the remainder of his rookie deal, which may be his final significant action with the Cowboys.
NFL preseason Week 3 observations – ESPN Staff
Playing in the preseason does not always mean as much as not playing does. Cooper Beebe, a rookie, did not play against the Chargers despite being clothed, which suggests he will start at center in Week 1. Similarly, Tyler Guyton, a first-round selection, started at left tackle following Chuma Edoga’s toe injury.
DaRon Bland’s reported requirement for six to eight weeks to recuperate from a forthcoming foot surgery will put cornerback depth to the test. After giving up a 48-yard grab against the Raiders, Andrew Booth, who was acquired from Minnesota earlier in camp, was beaten for a 78-yard score the following week. Another indication that the Cowboys will be depending on the rookie is the fact that Caelen Carson did not play on Saturday.
NFL Preseason Finale: Cowboys lose 26-19 to Chargers, Trey Lance suffers a late Pick-6 defeat, according to Cowboys Wire
Lance demonstrated his on-field immaturity with a few throws, but he also had some excellent moments as he began to test his downfield accuracy once more. After starting the drive on their own eight-yard line with one point deficit near the conclusion of the fourth quarter, Lance threw a poor pick that Tre’Mon Morris tipped to himself and raced 25 yards for the score.
Other than that, Dallas dominated, giving them some positive points but ultimately losing 26–19. It was the third and final major play of the game. Dallas finishes the preseason with a 1-2 record and now looks forward to playing the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 on September 8. In an attempt to leave a lasting impression, Lance ended the game by throwing for
His floor was depressing in a few plays, and his ceiling was visible in numerous others. After the Pick-6, he managed to muster two more drives to go for a tie or a victory, but all of them resulted in interceptions, with the exception of the fourth, on which WR Cam Johnson was intimidated by the defense into not going for a catch.
Though Lance had some excellent moments, his two standout ones were a 46-yard run down the left side for his own score and a gorgeous drop-in pass to rookie sixth round pick Ryan Flournoy. The Cowboys demonstrated their superiority on numerous rushing plays, amassing 246 yards on the ground thanks to the 5.5-yard averages of Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Connor.
Trey Lance trade to the Dallas Cowboys is a catastrophic move, according to Mac Engel of the Star-Telegram.
Mac Engel returns with his exaggerated Cowboys commentary, comparing the trade of a fourth-round pick to two disastrous transactions for first-round picks while Clarence Hill is out at the Star-Telegram.
In addition to Joey Galloway (who received two first-round picks) and Roy Williams (who received one first-round pick), Trey Lance (who received one fourth-round pick) joins the list of the Dallas Cowboys’ all-time awful acquisitions made under general manager/owner Jerry Jones.
Among the innumerable decisions Jerry has made since purchasing the Cowboys in February 1989, dealing for Lance continues to rank highly on the list of noteworthy JJ goal line blunders. At least Galloway and Williams participated in regular-season games for the team, so this one might be the worst. This transaction keeps displaying all the signs ofFor the Cowboys offense, awful.
Jerry Jones is happy that he traded Trey Lance for a fourth-round pick, according to Charean Williams, PFT.
For a choice in the fourth round? Are you joking with me? Jones chuckled as he spoke. “You are right, we did acquire Dak [Prescott] with our second fourth-round pick [in 2016], though. However, there have also been several players selected in the fourth round who were not selected.
Jones is not quite ready to declare the trade a loss.
“I would have hoped to get two-thirds of the plays you got to see him play [in the preseason] if I could have drawn this up,” Jones remarked. Was quite useful to us and to him as well, considering that he has not had many plays in comparison. I observed a few things that you can use to succeed.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, remarked, “I saw some good, and I saw some things you would like to have back.” “It bothers me that those five interceptions will be remembered as a stat in a game where I could have wished for greater playing time and better circumstances to witness him perform. He needed that because, above all else, the one thing he lacks is experience, especially NFL experience.
DaRon Bland of the Cowboys will have foot surgery; he could miss six to eight weeks: Someone takes the lead?
The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland will miss the first few games of the regular season due to surgery for a stress fracture in his foot. Bland should be out for six to eight weeks.
Bland’s absence is undoubtedly a significant loss for Dallas. He is rapidly rising to the top of the NFL’s cornerback ranks. Jourdan Lewis, the inside corner, is a solid player, and Trevon Diggs is an excellent starter for the Cowboys. However, there are now some important questions at the other corner, starting from the outside.
Although he has been impressive in camp, is rookie Caelen Carson ready to play? Here, Israel Mukuamu, a seasoned defensive back, is a name to remember. He can play corner and has done well in camp, but he has been working at safety. As teams reduce to 53 players, Dallas will also examine other rosters.

The Cowboys’ 2024 regular season begins on September 8 in Cleveland against the Browns. With slightly over two weeks to go, Jerry Jones, the general manager and owner of Dallas, anticipates that Bland will return between Weeks 5 and 6. He considers that timescale to be “good news.”
“Well, I am relieved it is not for a long time,” Jones remarked following the team’s Saturday preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. We drop four or five of our ball games to him. I pass through that rather quickly and carelessly. The good news is that we will have him for the most part of the deal even though the injury is serious and not to be taken lightly. The good news is that.
A number of seasoned, experienced cornerback possibilities, including 2010’s All-Decade Team member Patrick Peterson, four-time Pro Bowler Xavien Howard, and former Patriots Super Bowl-winning corner J.C. Jackson, are now unrestricted free agents. It would be possible to use any of these to mitigate Bland’s harm. Jones, however, insisted he does not look at what is available and instead chooses to highlight his own emerging ability.
When asked if he would search outside the team for cornerback depth, Jones responded, “Not at all.” Not at all. No, not at all. The good news is that a few of our men have performed incredibly well during camp. We are not going to look at all.
“I appreciate Carson’s ability to play at his level for the short amount of time he has been in the NFL,” Jones remarked. “He will undoubtedly have a fantastic opportunity to step in here. Over the past three or four years, we have had a few individuals enter the program and perform admirably as rookie cornerbacks. Thus, perhaps he will become All-Pro.
These five athletes were on the squad. Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com, on Saturday
Trey Lance, Deuce Vaughn, Ryan Flournoy, Asim Richards, and an unexpected linebacker round out Eatman’s roster.
Buddy Johnson This one is nearly there. Josh Ball was my first choice for the final place, but I wanted to talk about the defense. Alongside other linebackers Nick Vigil, Willie Harvey, and possibly even Darius Harris, who continues to play well, Johnson was right there on the brink of the bubble. However, Johnson has consistently made plays and did so again in the first half of the game on Saturday. He will be a great contributor on special teams, and I like how he plays the run and pass. On the strength of my intuition, I believe Johnson contributed enough to the team from this game.Jerry Jones predicts that the Cowboys’ 53-man roster’s treatment of tight end Calvin Watkins will be “really interesting.” -DMN
Cowboys vs. Chargers Stock Report: Trey Lance plummets while Deuce Vaughn and Ryan Flournoy climb – RJ Ochoa, Blogging the Boys
It is clear that, with enough dedication, the squad can make use of Vaughn’s skill set. He has demonstrated over the past month that he is capable of contributing as a player. He should be on the 53.
Be Ready: Buddy Johnson
Buddy Johnson has made an argument to be included in the Cowboys’ linebacker group, however it is unclear exactly how they will put together the group. He had an incredible play in which, with Dallas up against their goal line, he swatted a pass down close to the quarterback during the first half of this game. The play prevented the Chargers from scoring a score and forced them to settle for a field goal.
Holdings
The Cowboys have utilized Israel Mukuamu extensively throughout the years, and the reason for that is his ability to make an impact. He had another successful day on Saturday, and it appears like the squad may be able to use him to at least weather the absence of Bland.
Be Prepared: Royce Freeman
The Cowboys witnessed some impressive play from Royce Freeman in the first half of this contest. Although the actual number of running backs they will carry is still unknown, Freeman is a strong runner who demonstrated this against the Chargers. He is got a case.
John Stephens Jr.’s stock is down.
Early in the game, John Stephens Jr. grabbed an unbelievable pass up the seam from Trey Lance, which may have been Lance’s best throw to date. Regretfully, he stumbled over it right away. To put it plainly, these kinds of things are not possible. You can not afford to make those errors at the last minute.
Reduced Stock: Junior Fehoko
To put it plainly, since joining the team last year, he has not really shone. Early in the game, on the Simi Fehoko big touchdown, he took a bad step. Simply put, it was absent on Saturday.
